Longtime NFL draft analyst Todd McShay shared some thoughts this week on the upcoming matchup between the Tennessee Vols and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
There’s been a lot of talk about Mississippi State’s improved defense in 2025. The Bulldogs are allowing just 11.8 points per game through the first four games of the season.
McShay, though, isn’t sure Mississippi State’s defense is as good as the numbers suggest.
He noted on “The Todd McShay Show” that Arizona State, for example, “left a lot of completions” on the field in their loss to the Bulldogs earlier this season.
Todd McShay thinks Vols WR Chris Brazzell could have a huge game against Mississippi State
After watching tape of both teams, McShay is convinced that Vols wide receiver Chris Brazzell will have a big game against the Bulldogs. McShay also thinks Tennessee is going to “roll them”.
“When you watch the tape, you gotta report, like DeAgo Brumfield, 6-foot/190 lbs, a senior, he’s the guy to target,” said McShay. “He’s number four. If Tennessee can isolate Brazzell, I think Brazzell is gonna have a huge game.
“But then if you bring that safety over in a single high, then you’ve got (Braylon) Staley and (Mike) Matthews on the other side. So now, if we go two [safeties] back, I can run the football. So, like, something’s going to give. It’s going to take Tennessee coming out and making a lot of mistakes — it’s going to take a really uncomfortable circumstance. Because even in their (Mississippi State) pass rush, they don’t have guys. The one guy that could (rush the passer), Will Whitson, he was, I thought, their best pass rusher. And even NFL scouts agree — he was their highest-rated defensive prospect coming in. He got off to a really good start this season, [but he] suffered a season-ending injury against Arizona State. So I know everyone’s talking about Mississippi State, and everyone’s saying this is a dangerous game (for the Vols), and [Tennessee] could be looking ahead and get tripped up. I think Tennessee is going to roll them.”
Vols fans are certainly hoping McShay is correct. A big road win against Mississippi State would be quite a statement from Tennessee.
