247Sports published bowl game predictions for each SEC team this week and their projection for the Tennessee Vols is certain to leave UT fans rolling their eyes.
Not only does 247Sports have the Vols falling short of the College Football Playoff in 2024, they also have Tennessee playing the exact same opponent in a bowl game that they played last season.
The Iowa Hawkeyes….in the ReliaQuest Bowl (previously the Outback Bowl).
Tennessee beat Iowa 35-0 last season in the Citrus Bowl.
From 247Sports: Another powerful SEC team just outside of the playoff picture, at least right now, the Vols could be heading back to Central Florida for the postseason. Tennessee last played in Tampa at the end of the 2015 season and could play a Big Ten elite once again to end the campaign. If the Vols go 4-0 on September, this projection pushes toward a playoff appearance. Besides, are there any Vols fans out there who want to play Iowa and that offense again?
I don't see any way this bowl game happens this season. In fact, I'd put the chances at less than one percent.
And it's not because I think the Vols will or won't exceed expectations — we're nearing the time of year where predictions go out the window and results are all that matters.
Instead, it's because there's little chance that Tennessee, Iowa, and the ReliaQuest Bowl will all agree that a rematch of last year's Citrus Bowl is a good idea. It would be hard to generate much fan interest for that matchup.
I don't know how the 2024 season will play out — none of us do — but I'm almost certain that we won't see the Vols playing the Hawkeyes again in a postseason matchup (unless both teams somehow make the playoff).
