The Tennessee Vols are heading to Starkville this weekend for a matchup against the undefeated Mississippi State Bulldogs.

For the Vols, this is essentially a must-win game. Tennessee is 3-1 on the season after suffering a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Georgia Bulldogs earlier this month.

If the Vols were to lose this game, it would mean they’d likely need to win every game remaining on their schedule to reach the College Football Playoff (it’s possible an SEC team could get in at 9-3, but it just depends on how the rest of the season plays out).

A former Bulldogs player will be rooting on the Vols this weekend in Starkville.

Former Mississippi State defensive back Brian Staley played for the Bulldogs in the early 2000’s. But he’ll be cheering for Tennessee this weekend due to the fact that his son, Braylon Staley, is a redshirt freshman wide receiver for the Vols.

“It is,” said Braylon when asked by a reporter if this is a unique week for his dad. “But he’s rooting for the orange team.”

Braylon also noted that his dad gave him some advice on dealing with the loud environment at Mississippi State.

Family always comes first. It’s certainly not a surprise that the elder Staley will be cheering for Tennessee this weekend instead of the program he played for in college.
