The Tennessee Vols opened the 2025 college football season with a 45-26 win against the Syracuse Orange.

Tennessee finished the win against Syracuse with 495 total yards of offense, including 247 passing yards from quarterback Joey Aguilar in his first start for the Volunteers.

Overall, it was a solid performance from the Vols. Tennessee managed to generate some explosive plays — including a 73-yard touchdown pass from Aguilar to wide receiver Braylon Staley — and the running game looked as good as ever (248 rushing yards as a team).

Tennessee entered the game ranked No. 24 in the AP Top 25 poll.

Sports Illustrated’s Mike McDaniel took a shot at predicting what the new AP Top 25 poll will look like this week, and he has the Vols falling to No. 25, despite opening the season with a win.

On3 also predicted what the new AP Top 25 poll will look like, and they have Tennessee moving up one spot to No. 23.

Neither of the predictions has the Alabama Crimson Tide, which lost to unranked Florida State in Week 1, falling below the Vols in the AP Top 25.

That’s a great example of the bizarre groupthink that’s common among the national media. Alabama finished with a worse record than Tennessee last season, and they opened the season with a loss to an unranked team — how in the world can they still be ranked above the Vols?

The new AP Top 25 poll will be released on Tuesday.
