Tennessee tied the game in the fourth quarter before winning the game in the first overtime period via a DeSean Bishop touchdown run and an impressive goal-line stand from the defense.
The Vols moved to 4-1 on the season with the win.
Where the Tennessee Vols are predicted to land in the new AP Top 25 rankings
The new AP Top 25 rankings will be released later on Sunday afternoon.
Tennessee was ranked No. 15 in last week’s AP Top 25 poll after beating UAB 56-24.
On3 predicts that Tennessee will drop to No. 16 in this week’s rankings, one spot behind a Florida State team that lost to Virginia this past Friday night.
Sports Illustrated, meanwhile, has the Vols remaining at No. 15 after the tough road win over Mississippi State.
It seems clear that the national media won’t give much thought to the Vols’ win in Starkville, but it was an impressive victory for Tennessee. Winning on the road in the SEC is never easy. And that’s the type of game the Volunteers have lost in past seasons. It may not go down as an impressive win on paper, but I thought it was one of the more impressive wins of the Josh Heupel era.
It wasn’t pretty, and it was far from easy, but it showed how gritty Tennessee is as a team. Even when things weren’t going its way, the Vols never stopped competing. And they managed to scratch out a tough win in a game that could’ve easily gone the other way.
