The Tennessee Vols received some mid-summer bulletin board material this week from Athlon Sports that the program should absolutely use as motivation ahead of the 2024 season.
Athlon Sports revealed their 12-team College Football Playoff predictions this week and the Vols were absent.
Here's how they think the seeding will shake out for the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.
1. Georgia
2. Ohio State
3. Florida State
4. Utah
5. Oregon
6. Texas
7. Ole Miss
8. Alabama
9. Michigan
10. Penn State
11. Notre Dame
12. Liberty
Athlon Sports has Georgia beating Ohio State in the national championship game.
It's not "disrespectful" for Athlon Sports to to exclude the Vols from their playoff prediction.
But at the same time, Tennessee should go full Michael Jordan and take the "slight" from Athlon Sports personally.
SEC programs like Alabama (which has a new head coach) and Ole Miss (which has a team full of transfers that have to prove they can "gel") are getting the benefit of the doubt this summer while Tennessee has kind of been the forgotten team in the SEC.
It's fair considering the way the Vols' season went in 2023 (9-4 with tough losses to Florida, Missouri, Alabama, and Georgia). But Tennessee believes they're capable of winning a national championship this fall. And what happened in 2023 won't have any bearing on how they perform this fall.
We've seen over the last couple of years that Josh Heupel-coached teams play better when they have a chip on their shoulder. They'd be wise to use the non-belief from the national media to provide that chip in 2024.
