NFL scouts got real about Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton this week while discussing the top 11 quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft with ESPN.

Milton is listed by ESPN in the fourth tier of draft eligible quarterbacks, along with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler and Tulane's Michael Pratt.

One AFC scout that spoke with ESPN about Milton suggested that the former Vol has "shades of Cam Newton" in his game, but he also thinks that Milton doesn't have a good feel for the game.

"He's got shades of Cam Newton based on his ability — but his football acumen and his accuracy are issues," said the AFC scout to ESPN. "Just doesn't have the feel for the game or the position that you'd like to see."

An NFL personnel evaluator noted that Milton is a "developmental player" that will be "exciting" to work with.

Another AFC executive pointed out that Milton was great in interviews and — contrary to what the AFC scout told ESPN — showed great football acumen. The AFC executive added that Milton's downside is that he sometimes mades head-scratching decisions.

"Was great in interviews, showed good recall and football acumen," said the AFC executive. "There are just moments where he just short-circuits out there and makes you scratch your head at his decision-making."

Milton is going to get a chance to prove that he can be a productive NFL quarterback. But he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt from NFL teams. Instead, he's going to have to earn it.

Of course, I don't think that will be an issue for Milton. After all, he showed by staying at Tennessee to serve as the backup to Hendon Hooker in 2022 that he's not afraid of a little adversity.
