Bart Scott was a heck of a football player during his decade-long NFL career.
The former Southern Illinois linebacker went undrafted in 2002, but he continued to grind and he eventually became a Pro Bowler with the Baltimore Ravens. You gotta respect the journey.
But when it comes to being an NFL analyst for ESPN, Scott needs to raise the bar a bit.
Earlier this week, while discussing the Super Bowl LIX matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, Scott seemingly dismissed Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith by calling the former Tennessee Vols standout a "backup".
"This is where maybe some things that have happened this season for the Chiefs may come back to bite them," said Scott. "Because they had to take their best interior guy and move him outside. So now, Jalen Carter's going against a backup in Trey Smith."
The interior offensive lineman that moved to tackle for the Chiefs that Scott is referring to is Joe Thuney, who previously played at left guard for KC.
Smith, who was recently named to the Pro Bowl, is the Chiefs' starting right guard. And he has been for the last four seasons. Smith, in fact, has started 79 games (including the playoffs) for Kansas City since entering the league in 2021. The former Vol is expected to become the highest paid guard in the NFL when he becomes a free agent in March.
This isn't a random offensive lineman who no one has ever heard of — this is one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL.
Come on, Scott. You gotta be better than that if you're gonna be an analyst on ESPN. No one is expecting you to know the name and role of every single player in the league, but Smith is a guy that almost every NFL fan knows about.
