A senior NFL reporter from the Boston Globe compared New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton, a former Tennessee Vols standout, to an iconic character from a popular movie on Monday.
Milton, a sixth round selection by the Patriots earlier this spring, is known for his incredibly strong arm — he likely already has the strongest arm in the NFL.
There's also a narrative that the former Vol is inaccurate on the football field, though that's not entirely accurate (Milton completed 64.7 percent of his passes last season at Tennessee…Patriots first round draft pick Drake Maye, a fellow rookie, completed 63.3 percent of his passes at North Carolina last season).
On Monday, The Boston Globe's Ben Volin compared Milton to Charlie Sheen's character in Major League — Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, a pitcher known for his above average velocity and below average control.
I'm not sure it's fair to suggest that Milton has "no control". There's no doubt that his accuracy needs to improve if he wants to excel in the NFL. But it's not Ricky Vaughn bad.
Milton missed some throws at Tennessee. He also had some great passes that were dropped by receivers. It happens.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, for example, faced many of the same questions coming out of college at Wyoming (his completion percentage was worse than Milton's). And he's turned out just fine in the NFL.
Let's wait a bit before we label Milton as an NFL quarterback with "no control".
