It's fairly well-known among Tennessee Vols fans that former NFL coach Jon Gruden's wife, Cindy, is a former UT cheerleader.

Gruden met Cindy when he was serving as a graduate assistant at Tennessee under Johnny Majors in mid 1980s.

What might not be as well-known by Vols fans, however, is that before Gruden and Cindy got together, Cindy dated Majors' son.

Gruden told the story during a recent appearance on The Mike Keith Show

Here's the exchange between Gruden and Keith.

Keith: "He (Majors) wasn't always lovable, though. He certainly had a temper Why is it you love John Majors the way you always have?"

Gruden: "Well, there's a lot of reasons. My wife dated Coach Majors' son for three years. And then when they broke up, I drove in for the kill as they say."

Keith: "Wait, so your wife, before she dated you, she dated Johnny Majors' son, John?"

Gruden: "That's right. I think for two or three years, and then they broke up. And lucky for me, I'm still standing, if you know what I mean."

Keith: "I was going to say, Jon Gruden, that's a tricky move right there, that you're going to start dating your boss's son's [ex girlfriend]."

Gruden: "Oh believe me, Phil Fulmer and the guys, they said, 'you got a lot of guts, Gruden'. I took a lot of heat."

Things worked out pretty well for Jon and Cindy as the pair is still married all these years laters. And the relationship apparently didn't bother Majors too much because the Tennessee legend introduced Gruden at the 101 Awards in 2000 when Gruden won AFC coach of the year honors.

Gruden only spent two seasons at Tennessee, but that was enough for the Super Bowl-winning coach to develop a lifelong love for the Power T.
