Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, the man who was almost hired as the Tennessee Vols' head coach in 2017 before a fan revolt intervened, appeared to take a shot at the SEC this week.
The SEC is widely viewed as the best conference in college football.
And that's not just because the SEC as a whole has the best traditions in the sport — results over the last decade seem to confirm that the SEC is the best conference in college football.
The SEC has won all but four national championships since the 2006 season. That's pure dominance (the ACC has three national championships since 2006 and the Big 10 has one).
Despite those results, Schiano suggested this week that the Big 10 is the best conference in the sport — especially with the addition of USC and UCLA (they're both set to join the conference in 2024).
“I love the Big Ten conference, I think it is where we belong," said Schiano on Monday (via NJ.com). "With the addition of USC and UCLA, I think we took the best conference in America and made it even better. I can’t wait. That will be then. Right now, we have a summer program to get ready for and prepare for training camp and the 2023 season.”
I don't think anyone is expecting Schiano to concede that the SEC is the best conference in college football. But you'd think Schiano would have enough self-awareness to just avoid commenting at all.
But then again, it's not like self-awareness is something that's part of Schiano's personality.
After all, this is the guy who went on a weird rant about chopping down trees during his introductory press conference at Rutgers in 2019.
Clichés don't usually go over well with fan bases, but that didn't stop Schiano from firing off a litany of them in his introductory press conference. And nearly four years later, it looks like Schiano still hasn't learned his lesson.
