Five-star quarterback Arch Manning is the crown jewel of the 2023 recruiting class.

Manning has a great football pedigree (grandfather Archie Manning, uncles Peyton and Eli Manning, and dad Cooper), elite skills, and prototypical size.

He's essentially a dream recruit.

Only a few programs, however, have a legitimate shot to land Manning. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas appear to be the six programs that are still in the mix to land Manning.

(If you're a Tennessee Vols fan and you're wondering why UT isn't the mix for Peyton's nephew, it's partially because the volunteers have been focusing on five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who some consider to be equally as talented as Arch.)

It feels like Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss have the best shot here (I'm not sure how Florida even got in that group).

Early on, I thought LSU might have a good shot to land Manning. But that was before the program almost imploded under Ed Orgeron. Now that Brian Kelly is in town, I'm not sure the Tigers have even made Manning their top priority.

Now, obviously they're recruiting him. Kelly has been to Manning's high school in New Orleans to check in on him and build a relationship with the coaches there. But I think LSU's pursuit of Manning at this point is mostly for looks. I think Kelly knows Manning is likely to leave the state. But Kelly also knows he has to look like he fought hard for Manning. He can't just let him get away without at least looking like the Tigers put up a fight to keep him in Louisiana.

LSU's top 2023 quarterback recruiting target is probably five-star Detroit native Dante Moore, the No. 6 overall recruit.

Moore was in Baton Rouge this past weekend and he's been building a relationship with Kelly since the LSU coach was at Notre Dame.

Kelly likely knows that LSU has a better shot at landing Moore. And if they were truly all-in on Manning, it could hurt their chances with Moore. At some point, programs have to make a choice on which quarterback they're going to make their priority. LSU is in a tricky spot. The fan backlash if they just stopped recruiting Arch (the Tennessee approach, essentially) would be crippling to the program in Kelly's first season.

It'll be really interesting to see how Kelly and LSU handle this situation if Moore decides to commit before Manning. Because at that point, the program is basically "we're out" on Arch if they take a commitment from Moore.

Then again, I'm not sure fans would be too upset. Landing a five-star from Detroit in Dante Moore would be an extremely nice recruiting get for the Tigers.
