South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer weirdly threw some shade at one of his former players while meeting with reporters on Tuesday.

Beamer was asked by a reporter about the challenges of retaining players while also trying to find guys in the transfer portal.

The fourth-year head coach answered the question by referencing a player who left South Carolina's program after last season.

"There's a player that left our program after last season and one of the reasons he told me he was leaving was that [he didn't think] we were going to be very good, and we don't have a quarterback," said Beamer. "He told me that. And I said, 'Well, I disagree. We've got us a quarterback. You've seen our quarterbacks at practice, and we are going to be good around him.' And that player said, 'Well, I don't know coach. It isn't looking too good.' Well, he is somewhere else right now and there are a lot of guys that are here and are glad they're here."

It's unclear who Beamer was talking about, but the assumption is that he was referring to wide receiver Juice Wells, who transferred from South Carolina to Ole Miss after the 2023 season.

Wells had his best game of the season earlier this year when he caught three passes for 97 yards in the Rebels' 27-3 win against South Carolina in Columbia.

I'm not sure why Beamer decided to throw shade at a player for leaving. That's the business of college football these days. And Beamer knows that as well as anyone. South Carolina added 22 transfer players to their roster this past offseason (per The Athletic). You can't throw shade at a player for leaving while bringing in 22 players from other programs. That come across as kind of hypocritical.

The worst thing about Beamer's comments is that there was absolutely no reason to throw shade at Wells. South Carolina is having a great season. The Gamecocks are 7-3 and playing some great football right now. And if not for a blown call that cost them a win against LSU earlier this season, they'd be in the thick of the College Football Playoff conversation. South Carolina, in fact, could easily be 9-1 if a couple of things go their way in a narrow loss to Alabama in October.

Sometimes things are just better left unsaid. This was certainly one of those instances for Beamer.
