Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs is looking for a new home in the NFL after news broke on Monday that the New England Patriots are planning to release him.

Dobbs, who has started 15 career games while playing for nine different NFL teams, spent one season with the Patriots, passing for 65 yards while serving as Drake Maye’s backup in 2025.

The Patriots are moving on from Dobbs after signing Tommy DeVito to a two-year deal earlier this offseason.

Ben Roethlisberger would like to see Josh Dobbs back with the Steelers

Dobbs was a fourth-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent parts of five seasons with the franchise (2017-2019 and 2020-2021). The former Vol was teammates with Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger for all five of those seasons.

Roethlisberger suggested this week that Pittsburgh should bring Dobbs back to compete for playing time if future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return to the Steelers for a second season.

“Here’s something I would consider that happened recently,” said Roethlisberger on the Deebo and Joe Podcast. “Josh Dobbs just got released by New England. I would strongly, again, this is all about Aaron — if Aaron is not coming back — I’d love to bring a veteran guy in like Dobbs, who has been here. Obviously, it’s a new system, not the same coaching staff (as when Dobbs was in Pittsburgh before).”

Dobbs has never really had a chance to compete for a starting job, outside of fill-in duty with the Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings. He could be a short-term security blanket for the Steelers while they search for their next franchise quarterback.

But as Roethlisberger noted, it all depends on what Rodgers decides to do. And as NFL fans know, that’s a saga that could have all kinds of wild outcomes.
