Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs received some unwelcome news on Monday.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the New England Patriots are planning to release Dobbs.
Rapoport noted that New England was hoping to find a trade partner, but nothing materialized.
The Patriots are moving on from Dobbs after signing Tommy DeVito to a two-year deal earlier this offseason.
Dobbs passed for 65 yards last season while serving as Drake Maye’s backup.
The former Vol, who joined the Patriots last offseason after the franchise traded fellow former Vol Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys, has been in the NFL since 2017.
Dobbs has started 15 career games while playing for nine different NFL teams.
The most successful stretch of his career came in 2022 and 2023 when he made 14 starts while playing for the Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings.
Dobbs just turned 31 in January, so he still has plenty left in the tank. He shouldn’t have any issues finding a new team this offseason, though I’m sure he’ll look for a situation where he can serve as the No. 2 quarterback.
The Georgia native has passed for 3,346 yards and 17 touchdowns in his NFL career. Dobbs has also rushed for 515 yards and eight touchdowns.
