Tennessee didn’t show too much of its offense in the season opener against Furman.

The Vols kept things vanilla in the 56-9 win. That, of course, was by design with a road matchup against Georgia Tech on deck for Week 2.

Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key was expecting that to be the case, but he was actually impressed with the way Vols head coach Josh Heupel called the game for true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon while keeping things vanilla.

Key was also very impressed with Brandon’s performance.

Key joined 680 The Fan on Tuesday and talked about what he saw from Tennessee’s offense.

“It’s tough to tell a lot (about Tennessee’s offense),” said Key. “They got up pretty good kind of midway through that third quarter. They had a chance to play a lot of guys. I’m really impressed with the freshman quarterback. He’s a big, strong guy. He can make all the throws and he can pull it down and run with it.”

“His poise was phenomenal,” continued Key. “I mean, I knew he was a great talent, having seen him come up through high school. But to see his poise in the game and how he was able to manage and control the offense in whatever mode they were in — that’s what was most impressive. I thought Josh did a really good job of calling the game with him with it being (Brandon’s) first time out there. But also calling it to trust him and putting him position to make some plays.”

Heupel certainly did a nice job of not showing too much, but also giving Brandon a chance to make explosive plays (which he did — with his legs and his arms).

Tennessee’s offense (and defense) will likely look a little different against Georgia Tech as the Vols open things up against a tougher opponent.

On the flip side, Tennessee should have a small advantage in that Georgia Tech had to lay its cards on the table in a dogfight against Colorado in Week 1, so the Vols have a little better idea of what to expect offensively and defensively from the Yellow Jackets.
