The Tennessee Vols flipped the momentum during a critical part of the game in their 41-34 overtime win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs earned a first down after converting a fake punt. The Vols were trailing 24-20 at the time, and after the fake punt, Mississippi State had all of the momentum.
Tennessee’s defense, however, quickly took the air out of Davis Wade Stadium by forcing a fumble and returning it for a touchdown.
Vols defensive lineman Tyre West forced the fumble via his sack on Bulldogs quarterback Blake Shapen. Defensive lineman Joshua Josephs recovered the fumble and returned it for the touchdown, putting Tennessee ahead 27-24.
Vols cornerback Colton Hood hilariously describes what he did during the scoop and score
After the game, Vols cornerback Colton Hood was asked what he saw on the scoop and score.
Hood said that as soon as he realized what was happening, he started talking trash to the Mississippi State sideline.
“I didn’t even see the ball,” said Hood. “I was guarding my man, and then all I hear is the crowd go silent. And I look and I see — I didn’t even know who was running the ball, honestly. And I was like, ‘Oh, we’re running the ball’. And I looked to their sideline, and I started talking trash.
“But, I mean, I was so happy for those boys. Honestly, I didn’t even know who scored the touchdown until after the game.”
It was certainly one of the biggest moments of a competitive game. And I’m sure that was far from the only trash talk shared between the two teams on Saturday in Davis Wade Stadium.
