Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello is quickly becoming a legend in Knoxville.
And not just because of the BaseVols' recent on-field success (though that certainly helps).
Vitello has endeared himself to Tennessee fans because of the way he supports UT athletics in general.
On Saturday, Vitello sat courtside in a Zakai Zeigler jersey for the Vols' 67-62 win against the Auburn Tigers. Last year, he showed up to a football game dressed like an assistant coach.
It's easy to see why this guy is so loved by fans — he's all in when it comes to UT.
On Monday, during an appearance on The Buck Reising Show on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, Vitello gave his thoughts on Tennessee fans, the city of Knoxville, and the state of UT athletics.
"It's a great state, the campus is gorgeous," said Vitello to Reising. "Knoxville is arguably the best…it's a city but it plays like a college town — and I don't care who you are you can't say it's not one of the best in the country. So why would it not be a great place for athletics?"
"You sprinkle in probably the craziest fan base in the country, I don't see why things shouldn't be good. And we're all working hard to try to make sure they're great."
Vitello is right — the Tennessee fan base might be the craziest in the country.
But that's not a bad thing. That's just how passionate Vol fans are about athletics. And Vitello is leaning all the way into that crazy fan base. He fully embraces the craziness.
And that's why Tennessee fans have fully embraced Vitello right back.
