It’s no secret that Tennessee Vols legend Peyton Manning loves his alma mater.

Peyton shows up on Saturdays in Neyland Stadium (and sometimes on the road, too) as often as he can to support the Volunteers. And it seems like he’s constantly bringing up Tennessee during public appearances.

The support from Peyton, though, isn’t just surface level. The Hall of Fame quarterback makes a concerted effort to share advice and wisdom with Tennessee’s players — specifically with Joey Aguilar, the Vols’ starting quarterback.

Joey Aguilar details his relationship with Peyton Manning

Aguilar recently joined Beyond the Orange and he detailed his relationship with Peyton.

“He’ll shoot me a text or shoot me a call,” said Aguilar when asked about his relationship with Peyton. “Just to have a guy like that supporting you, you know, he’s been through this. He’s been through the NFL, and had a great, successful life in football. It’s awesome to know that if I have a question, if I want to know what he thinks in certain situations, that I can call [him], is truly helpful.”

“Just be yourself out there in games,” continued Aguilar when asked what kind of advice he receives from Peyton. “It can be a lot. Especially (ESPN’s) GameDay and playing a good team like [Georgia]. It can be a lot. But just stay true to yourself, live to the next play, and trust in your guys and just lead your team. Because everybody looks at me. If I’m walking out with my head down on a bad play or a bad drive, that energy feeds off to everybody. So just go out there and be a great leader and keep my head up and encourage the team.”

Peyton’s investment into Tennessee football isn’t eye wash. He doesn’t just show up during the good times. Peyton supports whoever is under center and on the sideline making the calls. And that’s because, of course, Peyton is an elite leader who knows that a program will only have success if everyone is bought in — including the retired quarterback who took his last snap at Tennessee nearly 30 years ago.
