A former Tennessee Vols assistant coach was reportedly hired by the New England Patriots on Monday.

According a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is hiring Doug Marrone to New England's staff.

Marrone served as the Vols' tight ends coach and offensive tackles coach under Phillip Fulmer in 2001.

"Doug Marrone is a very fine coach, and now we'll go hire another fine coach to replace him," said Fulmer when Marrone left Tennessee for the New York Jets after the 2001 season. "Doug did a very good job for us and I am happy for him. He told me Sunday night about the job and he handled things the right way, and so did the Jets."

Marrone has extensive college football and NFL experience as a coach. In addition to his time at Tennessee, Marrone has also served as an assistant coach at Georgia and Alabama. He was also the head coach at Syracuse from 2009 to 2012. Marrone left Syracuse after the 2012 season to become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, a job he held for two seasons.

In 2017, Marrone was named as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was not retained after the 2020 season.

Younger Vols fans probably aren't familiar with Marrone, but they may recognize his name. Marrone was mentioned as a head coaching candidate for Tennessee in early 2021 before Josh Heupel was eventually hired by the Vols.

Marrone will join a star-studded staff in New England that also includes longtime offensive coordinator and former NFL head coach Josh McDaniels.

Vrabel, who is replacing former Vols linebacker Jerod Mayo in New England, is entering his first season as the Patriots' head coach.
