Garrett Crochet wasn't expected to be one of the best in baseball in 2024, at least by those outside of the Chicago White Sox organization.  But hey, baseball would be nothing if not unpredictable, right?

That turns out to be the case in 2024 with the former Tennessee Vols pitcher.  Crochet has had a start to the 2024 major league baseball season that goes beyond most experts' wildest predictions.

According to Chuck Carfien of NBC Sports Chicago, Crochet has been the best pitcher in baseball across three of the biggest statistical categories over the last month.

For the season, Crochet has a 3.25 ERA in 16 starts (88.2 innings pitched) with 124 strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP mark (walks and hits per inning pitched).  His .195 batting average against is sixth best among the majors, too.

Crochet has turned into the team's ace, both de facto and by his performance.  The White Sox traded former top starter Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres during spring training, which earned Crochet the opening day start.  Crochet delivered, striking out eight and walking none with one run allowed over six innings.  He's managed to stay steady ever since, thus earning that top of the rotation status through the first half of the season that he was given on opening day.

Crochet had excellent swing and miss stuff during his time in Knoxville and showed pretty good control.  He struck out 149 batters while allowing just 48 walks during his career at Tennessee from 2018-2020.  That earned him getting drafted with the 11th overall pick by the White Sox in the 2020 draft.

Now, he's become arguably the best VFL in the major leagues today.  And the way he's looking on the mound, it seems like he's going to become a mainstay in the Windy City for a long time.
