The Tennessee Vols will begin Super Regional play in Knoxville on Friday in a best-of-three series against Evansville.
On Wednesday, while speaking with reporters, Vitello revealed that Vols sophomore RHP AJ Russell won't be available for the Super Regional against Evansville.
Vitello added that Russell will likely be shut down for the rest of the season.
Russell missed the majority of the regular season while dealing with arm soreness.
The Tennessee native returned for Tennessee's SEC Tournament game against Vanderbilt last month, pitching one inning. Russell also pitched an inning against LSU in the SEC Tournament championship game. He didn't appear in any of the Vols' regional games.
Tennessee has made it this far without having to rely on Russell, but the added pitching depth as the Vols attempt to reach a second straight College World Series certainly would've been nice.
