The Tennessee Vols landed a five-star recruit last month when quarterback Nico Iamaleava committed to UT.

And they could be adding another five-star recruit in the not-so-distant future.

According to On3.com's Chad Simmons, the Vols aren't just in the mix to land five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate, they might actually be the favorites.

Simmons reported on Wednesday that Tennessee "could have a slight edge [for Tate] with a decision nearing".

The other program that is strongly in the mix to land Tate is Ohio State.

Tate, 6-foot-2/185 lbs from Chicago (he attends high school in Florida), is rated by 247Sports as the No. 2 overall wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class.

Tate took a visit to Tennessee this past weekend that reportedly went extremely well (it helped that Iamaleava and other top recruits were also on campus).

If the Vols can land Tate, they'll be getting a dynamic wide receiver that could best be described as "complete".

Here's the scouting report on Tate from 247Sports:

The type of wide receiver that always seems to be open. Creates plenty of separation at the line of scrimmage and is able to beat both zone and man coverage once underway. Superb body control and large 10-inch hands allow him to make extremely difficult catches look relatively easy. Competitive not only at the catch point, but also once the ball is in his hands as he will fight to pick up additional yardage. Owns a rather slender build now, but should eventually carry 195 pounds or more. Has experience working both inside and outside. Shifty enough in the open field to be featured as a return man, as well…hould be viewed as one of the top pass catchers in a deep 2023 wide receiver class and a potential all-conference type of player for a Top 25 program. Ability to consistently shake defenders and generate big plays will eventually have him on the radar of NFL scouts.

A Tate/Iamaleava connection would make the Vols' offense under Josh Heupel extremely lethal. Tennessee still has to close the deal, but it certainly appears that UT has a legitimate shot here to bring Tate to Knoxville.
