Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel is on the verge of proving he's an elite recruiter in the SEC.
The Vols have the No. 8 recruiting class in the nation after securing a commitment from four-star in-state edge rusher Caleb Herring on Tuesday.
Herring's commitment comes less than a month after five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava committed to the Vols.
And according to Herring, the Vols are nowhere close to being done.
Herring, the younger brother of 2022 Vols three-star signee Elijah Herring, spoke to VolQuest's Austin Price after his commitment on Tuesday and he strongly suggested that numerous recruits will be following him to Knoxville.
"A lot of the defensive guys (recruits) talk to me," said Herring. "People who haven't committed yet, talk to me and are like 'if you commit to Tennessee, we're going to come with you'. I have a whole lot of players who are planning to come to Tennessee with me."
It's unclear exactly who Herring is referring to with his comments, but he clearly feels confident he'll be able to help bring some additional talent to Rocky Top in the coming weeks/months.
Herring's recruiting efforts combined with Iamaleava's should help the Vols land an elite recruiting class.
That's all Tennessee needs under Heupel. He proved last year that his scheme works in the SEC. The Vols just need to add elite talent on the defensive side of the ball and they can quickly turn into a legitimate contender in the SEC East.
For the Vols to compete for a national championship — which is already the goal according to UT tight end Princeton Fant — they need two or three top-five recruiting classes in a row.
The 2023 recruiting class is essentially the first step toward bringing a natty back to Knoxville.
