Tennessee Vols: How Jeremy Pruitt is staying true to his word during a rough start to season

College football recruiting is a funny thing.
It starts with head coaches lavishing attention on high school athletes, making promises to get highly touted recruits to sign with them.
Every highly sought after recruit eventually signs somewhere and arrives on a campus.
At that point, everything changes. The head coach that was nice, becomes (in most cases) a pain in the rear to the talented recruit. There's lots of yelling, and sometimes broken promises.
But not with Tennessee Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt. There's certainly plenty of yelling, but the broken promises are, as far as I can tell, non existent with Pruitt.
There was a perfect example of how Pruitt stays true to his word this week with sophomore running back/linebacker Jeremy Banks.
So far this season, Banks has been working mostly at linebacker, due to the Vols' lack of depth at the position. The move makes perfect sense. Banks, who worked some at inside linebacker during practice this week, is a young player who plays the game with the type of toughness that a coach would look for in a linebacker. It's almost like he was born to play linebacker. Banks is a tough runner as well, but he's had some ball security issues.
I'm of the opinion that Banks should make the permanent move to linebacker.
But Pruitt isn't ready to make that move — even though it seems like he would prefer Banks at linebacker.
The reason?
It's because Banks wants to play running back.
Pruitt told a caller during Vol Calls on Wednesday night that he believes Banks could be as good as any linebacker he's coached. But he noted that Banks "really wants to play running back". Pruitt added "one thing I’ll never do is get a guy to play a position that he doesn’t want to".
I think that says a lot about Pruitt. We all know how Butch Jones made promises to former UT running back Jalen Hurd to use him in different ways. Those promises were never fulfilled and Hurd left the program.
That doesn't appear to be something recruits have to worry about with Pruitt. He's made multiple public promises to not make a player play where they don't want to play. Banks is willing to help out at linebacker. And he should be commended for being a team player.
Pruitt is publicly holding himself accountable to Banks by making these type of comments.
The Vols might be 0-2, but fans should still be proud of the way their program's head coach carries himself.
Not all fan bases can say that.
