It's not every day in the SEC you win games in the thirties, although it does happen from time to time.

However, it's far rarer to accumulate such an advantage by the halftime whistle, and the Tennessee Volunteers did it on Saturday night against the Commodores in their 88-53 win at the Food City Center.

Tennessee had a start for the ages against the Commodores, jumping out to a 35-8 lead with just under 7 minutes left in the half.  However, it was the halftime score that was really noteworthy for the purposes of recent Tennessee basketball history, as the Vols led 51-20 at the break.

According to the university, the 31-point halftime lead was just the second time since the 1996 season that the Vols held such a large lead at halftime in an SEC game.  The other?  A 50-18 lead against LSU on January 6, 1999.  The Vols would go on to win that game 93-58.

Tennessee's performance was perhaps the best overall team showing of the season. All five Tennessee starters reached double figure scoring, with Dalton Knecht and Zakai Zeigler leading the way with 14 points each.  11 total players scored for Tennessee in the win.

The schedule will hit another gear soon, as the Vols face as many as five possible tournament teams over their next six games to end the regular season.  However, if Tennessee can play this soundly and balanced as a team, then the Vols could end up accomplishing a number of other rare feats once mid-March rolls around.
