The Tennessee Vols might have Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban a little nervous this weekend.
On Tuesday, we noted that Alabama 2024 five-star wide receiver commit Perry Thompson is reportedly set to visit Tennessee this weekend for the program's junior day.
I wrote that it was unlikely that the Vols flip Thompson, the No. 3 wide receiver in the nation, because he told 247Sports that he's solidly committed to Bama.
It turns out that he might not be as solidly committed to the Crimson Tide as we thought.
Thompson told On3's Chad Simmons that he's "60 percent" committed to Bama and he's going to keep taking visits.
Thompson also discussed his upcoming visit to Knoxville.
“I really just want to learn about the school this weekend," said Thompson. "I know Tennessee has a nice campus, their offense is fast and they score points. Coach (Kelsey) Pope and I have been talking, so now I just want to get up there and see how everything is.”
Maybe this is a ploy to get more NIL cash out of Bama (total speculation on that). Or maybe he legitimately is going to give other programs a chance.
Either way, this is one of the top wide receivers in the nation. Thompson will be playing on Sundays if he lives up to his ranking — that's not a player that Saban wants to let get away. And he definitely doesn't want Thompson to go to Tennessee, a team that Alabama plays every season.
We'll see what happens this weekend with Thompson's visit, but it sounds like Saban might have a legit reason to worry.
