Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones did his best Derek Dooley impression earlier this month.
And he nailed it….even though he wasn't actually trying to do an impression of Dooley, who was Jones' predecessor at Tennessee.
Jones, who is currently the head coach at Arkansas State, spoke to KAIT earlier this month and he used a phrase that will sound very familiar to Tennessee fans.
"We're continuing to build the culture, but year three, which really [it's] year two because year one was year zero, I see a complete change (in the team)," said Jones.
In 2011, after Dooley's first year at Tennessee, the former UT head coach famously called the 2010 season (Dooley's first in Knoxville) "year zero".
"I kind of feel like this is year one and last year was year zero," said Dooley ahead of the 2011 season. "It was such a unique situation that we walked into last season, it didn't feel like your first year. I feel like right now, this is year one."
Maybe Dooley left behind a few notes in his office for Jones in 2012 (when Dooley was fired by the Vols).
Of course, if Jones had any sense, he'd throw any notes that Dooley left behind straight into the trash (to be fair, Jones led the Vols to two nine-win seasons…below expectations those seasons but far better than his predecessor or successor fared).
Taking a look back at Jones and Dooley probably isn't something Tennessee fans want to do often. But it's a great reminder of how far the program has come under current head coach Josh Heupel.
