The Tennessee Vols are in the mix for several 2024 five-star recruits, but there's one five-star recruit that UT is reportedly out of the running for. 

247Sports' Steve Wiltfong reported this week that 2024 five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri, who plans to announce his commitment on August 1, is down to three teams. 

And the Vols aren't one of those three teams. 

Instead, Nwaneri's final three schools are Georgia, Missouri, and Oklahoma (Tennessee and Oregon are noted as being in Nwaneri's top five, but not among his final three schools). 

Nwaneri, 6-foot-5/250 lbs from Lees Summit, MO, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 1 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 3 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class. 

This is an unfortunate development for Tennessee — especially since the Vols were described as "the team to beat" by On3's Chad Simmons in early May. 

If you're a Tennessee fan and you're hoping the Vols can get back in the mix, you probably shouldn't get your hopes up. Tennessee hosted Nwaneri on an official visit in mid-June. If the Vols aren't among Nwaneri's top three after that official visit, then there isn't much else UT can do in this recruiting battle. 

The best case scenario for Tennessee at this point is that Nwaneri chooses Missouri over Georgia and Oklahoma. The last thing the Vols want is to see another stud defensive lineman land in Athens.
