The Tennessee Vols can add another award from this season to their list of achievements. The SEC has named Chase Dollander the SEC Pitcher of the Year. Tennessee's frequent Friday night starter got the nod as the top arm in the league.
It's certainly well-deserved for Dollander as well. He led the entire country in WHIP, and he led the SEC in ERA. Dollander allowed a measly opponent's batting average of just .158. He went 8-0 with a 2.30 ERA, 90 strikeouts, and just 9 walks. The Vols righty allowed just 16 earned runs in almost 63 innings. Dollander went at least five innings in all but two of his eleven starts. He finished the season in impressive fashion with six no-hit innings against Mississippi State.
Dollander was about as consistent as a pitcher can be in a conference like the SEC. He consistently gave the Vols length, allowing them to deploy their bullpen heavier in games two and three of SEC series. That goes a long way when you have the talent that Tennessee does on their pitching staff. In SEC play, Dollander had a 1.67 ERA and a 0.58 WHIP. Those are video game numbers in the SEC.
Not to mention, Dollander's mechanics drew comparisons to one of the best pitchers in MLB history. He and the Mets' Jacob DeGrom have a lot of similarities in that department, and that's high praise.
Not shockingly, the righty also headlined the pitchers for the All-SEC team. Vols teammates Chase Burns and Drew Beam were also selected.
