One of the Tennessee Vols' big offseason transfer additions was named this week by CBS Sports as one of college football's top "second-year breakout star" candidates in 2024.

CBS Sports listed Vols offensive lineman Lance Heard as a potential second-year breakout star on Monday.

Heard, who was rated as a five-star offensive lineman during the 2023 recruiting cycle, spent the 2023 season at LSU before transferring to Tennessee earlier this offseason.

The Louisiana native played in 12 games for the Tigers last season with one start.

From CBS Sports: Heard, the No. 3 offensive tackle in the Class of 2023, initially signed with LSU and spent his freshman season as one of the Tigers' top reserves. Given the loaded depth chart ahead of him in Baton Rouge, which was filled with young starting options, Heard transferred to Tennessee as one of the top offensive linemen in the portal. He'll start at left tackle immediately for the Vols, tasked with guarding new starting quarterback and former five star Nico Iamaleava's blindside.

The Vols found themselves in need of an offensive lineman this offseason when right tackle Gerald Mincey surprisingly entered the NCAA transfer portal in January.

Mincey, who started his career at Florida before transferring to Tennessee, ended up transferring to Kentucky.

Before Mincey's transfer, the expectation for the 2024 season was that John Campbell, who transferred from Miami to Tennessee ahead of the 2023 season, would start at left tackle with Mincey at right tackle (which is how it played out during the 2023 season).

But with Heard now in the mix, it's expected that Campbell will move to right tackle for the 2024 season with Heard holding down the left tackle spot.
