An under appreciated Tennessee Vols offensive lineman announced on Thursday that he's returning for the 2024 season.
Offensive lineman Dayne Davis, a former preferred walk-on, announced on Thursday that he's going to return to Tennessee next fall for his final season of eligibility.
"Growing up a fan of the Vols and being able to wear the T every Saturday for the past five years, I couldn't pass up on an opportunity for one more year to compete with my brothers for а championship," wrote Davis on Thursday in a message posted to social media. "With another year left of eligibility, I'll be staying in Knoxville to compete for a championship one last year with my brothers. Home is where my heart is, Rocky Top Tennessee."
Davis, who is from Bluff City, TN, joined the Vols in 2019 after a standout career at Sullivan East High School.
The Tennessee native has filled a variety of roles for the Vols during his career on Rocky Top. In 2021, Davis played in all 13 games for Tennessee and made three starts at right tackle. In 2022, Davis again played in all 13 games for the Vols, seeing action at left tackle and right tackle (Davis played 19 snaps at left tackle in Tennessee's win against LSU in Baton Rouge).
This past season, Davis started the final three games of the season for the Vols at right tackle. He also saw action at center early in the season while Cooper Mays was sidelined.
Davis may not be a "star player" at Tennessee, but he's provided incredibly valuable snaps for the Vols during his time in Knoxville. Returning a player with his experience for the 2024 season will be huge for the Vols' offensive line depth — especially in the transfer portal era with it becoming increasingly more difficult for programs to build quality depth.
Comment from NFL scout all but guarantees that 2024 will be final season for key Tennessee Vols player
Enjoy him while he’s on Rocky Top
