Tennessee Vols redshirt senior wide receiver Bru McCoy joined 102.3 SportsTalk Chattanooga on Monday for his weekly appearance and he was asked about his favorite uniform combination that UT wears.
The California native went with a uniform combination that is certain to bring back some bad memories for Tennessee fans.
"I think mine is probably a little unorthodox," said McCoy when asked about his favorite uniform at Tennessee. "I like the orange helmets, white jersey, orange pants. That's my favorite combo. I know it's a bit taboo or whatever. I think it looks the best, but aside from that it would be the smokey grey hands down."
(Tennessee will wear a new version of the smokey grey uniforms in the season-opener against Chattanooga on Saturday.)
Tennessee wore the orange helmets in their blowout loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia in 2022. That was also the game where quarterback Hendon Hooker tore his ACL.
(The Vols wore all white with the orange helmets against South Carolina in 2022.)
It's safe to say that a large portion of the Tennessee fan base isn't eager to see those helmets used again anytime soon.
I'm sure they'll get used again at some point — especially if McCoy has a say — but I'm betting they won't be used for a big-time game this time around.
