Former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh was a big part of UT football's success in 2021 and 2022.
Golesh, who left Tennessee after the 2022 season to become the head coach at USF, served as the Vols' playcaller during those two seasons (which, to this point, have been Tennessee's two best offensive seasons under head coach Josh Heupel).
The former Tennessee offensive coordinator, who is entering his third season as the head coach at USF (he's 14-12 through two seasons), recently reflected on his time in Knoxville during an appearance on Inside the Headset.
"I knew kind of what I wanted, but I also knew what I needed to go be successful," said Golesh of his mindset before becoming a head coach. "Because I felt like I had one of the best jobs in the country. I was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, working for an incredible guy in Josh Heupel [and] with an incredible staff. We were recruiting at a high level.
"There's very few places like Tennessee. And I think unless you've been there — obviously the fan base, what the brand is. And then taking that program from really, really struggling to we spent a portion of the year as the number one team in the country. And we played some incredible games — like, big games in Knoxville, Tennessee. There's very few things cooler than that. And for me, I was with a bunch of really, really good people, making more money than I ever thought I would make. And there was nothing I wanted. It was going to take an opportunity that I thought I could be really, really successful at to even walk away from that, because I knew how fortunate I was to have that job. And I never took it for granted."
Golesh was only at Tennessee for two seasons, but he quickly became an all-time fan favorite during that short time. That's in part because the offense was incredibly successful during Golesh's two seasons. It's also because of the edge that Golesh help bring to the program.
Things are trending in the right direction for Golesh at USF, and it looks like he's going to be a head coach in college football for a long time. But if something ever happens and he's in need of a coordinator job, he'd undoubtedly be welcomed back to Rocky Top with open arms.
There's a big positive coming out of the Boo Carter situation that Tennessee Vols fans should be fired up about
Tennessee Vols fans almost escaped the summer without any drama. Almost. News broke last week that sophomore defensive back Boo Carter, a former four-star recruit who is one of the Vols' most talented players, has missed some team activities this summer.
