Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello experienced a unique test this week in the final game of the San Francisco Giants’ series against the San Diego Padres.

And Vitello, who is in his first season as the Giants’ manager, handled it perfectly.

At one point in the 7-1 loss to the Padres, third baseman Matt Chapman made a running throw to first base that was simply missed by first baseman Casey Schmitt.

After the play, Chapman was captured by cameras telling Schmitt to “catch the f—-ing ball”.

The clip instantly went viral.

Vitello was asked about the play after the game, and he compared it to someone telling their brother to catch the ball in the back yard.

“He (Chapman) was upset,” said Vitello. “I mean, he’s trying to win the game… there was frustration out of everybody, including both guys involved with the play. They want to make the play as bad as anyone, but you ain’t going to undo it.”

Those kind of situations are going to pop up from time to time over the course of a 162 game season. Vitello handled it well by addressing it directly instead of trying to pretend like he didn’t see it (which is what a lot of managers would do).

Vitello is going to have plenty of situations this season he’s never experienced before. He aced his first test.
