The Tennessee Vols have made some key transfer additions over the last couple of weeks, specifically on defense.

Tennessee has added 11 defensive transfers this offseason. That includes four transfers from Penn State who played under new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles last season.

While the Vols have done good work in the portal, there are still some areas where Tennessee could stand to improve its depth.

“If they could find a defensive lineman that could help them, an interior guy, that’d be great,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price Wednesday on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. “Finding a third corner (is also a possibility). Again, who goes in from Indiana or Miami? And then, who even potentially goes in later today from a school that found out late last Friday that a kid was going to go in, and they didn’t have to do anything during the weekend or on Monday. So the 48 hours started Tuesday. Again, it’s interior defensive line [and] cornerback.”

A defensive lineman who has a connection to new Tennessee strength coach Derek Owings reportedly entered the transfer portal on Thursday.

According to CBS Sports, Indiana Hoosiers defensive lineman Hosea Wheeler has entered the portal.

Wheeler and Owings were together at Indiana this past season.

The transfer defensive lineman played in Indiana’s win against Miami in the College Football Playoff championship game earlier this week. Players from Miami and Indiana have five days after the championship game to enter the portal.

Wheeler, 6-3, 300 pounds from Sacramento, CA, is a former unrated recruit who started his career at Sacramento City College before landing at Western Kentucky. He spent three seasons at WKU before transferring to Indiana ahead of the 2025 season.

The California native played in every game for the Hoosiers in 2025 (with five starts), totaling 31 tackles. Wheeler, who has one season of eligibility remaining, has 139 tackles and four sacks in his college career.

Tennessee still needs to add some defensive line depth. Wheeler would be a great addition, given his connection to Owings and his experience as an older player.

We’ll see if the Vols decide to get into the mix for the Indiana transfer.
