2027 four-star cornerback Joshua Dobson is interested in the Tennessee Vols in part because of a UT assistant coach who isn't currently under contract for the 2025 season.

Dobson, 6-foot-1/175 lbs from Fort Mill, SC, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 2 cornerback in the nation and the No. 27 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class. He's also rated as the No. 2 player in the state of South Carolina.

The coveted recruit recently spoke to On3 about his recruitment and he offered a big compliment for Vols cornerbacks coach Willie Martinez.

“Their cornerbacks coach, Willie Martinez, is really smart," said Dobson to On3. "He knows what he’s doing. I like the way they go about things. They’re very family-oriented and they stand out to me a lot right now. I like it. They care about not only you, but also your family.”

Martinez, who is in his second stint on Tennessee's coaching staff (he previously served as the secondary coach at UT under Butch Jones from 2013 to 2016), is not currently under contract for the 2025 season.

VolQuest's Brent Hubbs, however, told 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Friday morning that he thinks Martinez will return to Tennessee in 2025, though nothing is done yet (Hubbs added that he thinks Martinez, if he returns, will be on a one year deal, as he was last season).

Martinez will turn 62 in February, so he's undoubtedly in the final act of his college football coaching career. But it doesn't sound like he's ready to hang up the whistle just yet.

And that's good news for the Vols' pursuit of Dobson, one of the best defensive players in the 2027 recruiting class.
