VolQuest's Brent Hubbs joined 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Friday morning and he detailed the Tennessee Vols' likely plan if a key player is unable to play against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night.
Tennessee listed starting sophomore left tackle Lance Heard as questionable this week on the SEC injury report. Heard missed last week's game against Kent State while dealing with an ankle injury.
The feeling is that Heard will give it a go on Saturday night in Norman against the Sooners.
If Heard isn't able to play, Hubbs thinks it'll be redshirt senior Dayne Davis that gets the start at left tackle instead of flipping redshirt senior John Campbell to left tackle (Campbell started nine games at left tackle for Tennessee last season).
"Obviously all eyes are going to be on the left tackle position and what happens with Lance Heard, who is listed as questionable for this game, " said Hubbs. "If it's not Lance Heard, then I think Tennessee probably goes Dayne Davis there and keeps John Campbell on the right side. I don't think they'll flip. They could flip (Davis and Campbell), but I don't think they will. And so we'll see what happens with Lance Heard. That's the big storyline that's popped up late this week with the new SEC injury report that comes out on Wednesdays."
Tennessee is obviously hoping that Heard will play on Saturday night. The Vols don't have a ton of depth along their offensive line. And not having Heard, a former five-star recruit, would be a big loss as Tennessee prepares for its toughest test yet this season.
Of course, this could all be some gamesmanship from Vols head coach Josh Heupel. VolQuest's Austin Price told 104.5 The Zone earlier this week that he was told Heard could've played last week if necessary.
In just a little over 24 hours, we'll have more clarity on whether or not Heard will play against the Sooners.
