On3's Jesse Simonton recently named his 10 most intriguing players in the SEC in 2023 and Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton made his list.
Milton, who started his career at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee in 2021, is expected to serve as the Vols' starting quarterback this fall.
The Florida native has made four starts for the Vols during his first two seasons on Rocky Top. Tennessee is 3-1 in those starts (wins against Bowling Green, Vanderbilt, and Clemson with a loss to Pittsburgh).
From On3: Joe Milton has spent the last two seasons honing his game and waiting for his opportunity to lead Tennessee’s offense. The former Michigan transfer beat out Hendon Hooker for the starting job in 2021, but a minor injury and inconsistency relegated Milton to the bench. He was great in a backup role in 2022 (10 touchdowns to zero picks, led the Vols to an Orange Bowl win over Clemson), and now it’s his show.
Milton has perhaps the best pure arm talent in America. He could be this year’s Anthony Richardson or Will Levis, generating Top 5 buzz thanks to some freakish plays. He also could get benched again if the accuracy issues return, as 5-star freshman Nico Iamaleava is the heir apparent for Tennessee’s offense.
Milton has the attributes to be a top five pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He has a ridiculously strong arm and ideal size. If he can prove to be consistently accurate while improving his running skills, then Milton could easily be Heisman Trophy finalist in December.
All of the tools are there for Milton to dominate. And the 2023 season will be Milton's best chance yet to deliver on the hype that's surrounded him since his days at Michigan.
