247Sports revealed their 2023 pre-season SEC quarterback rankings on Monday and Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton landed near the top of the list.
Despite only having four starts under his belt at Tennessee, Milton comes in at No. 4 in 247Sports' rankings.
Kentucky's Devin Leary comes in at No. 3 with LSU's Jayden Daniels at No. 2 and Arkansas' KJ Jefferson at No. 1.
From 247Sports: Joe Milton has the strongest arm in the country, which may not mean much if he's unable to hit an open man across the middle on one of Josh Heupel's patented play-action gashers. but will that translate on the field over a full season? We saw a small sample of his abilities last season, notably late in the year following Hendon Hooker's knee injury. Milton threw six touchdown passes in five appearances against Power Five competition, his best performance coming against Clemson in the Orange Bowl win. We mentioned heading into spring there was no quarterback controversy for the Vols, despite the hoopla surrounding five-star freshman Nico Iamaleava. He did some nice things over his first 15 college practices, but this is Milton's offense for now and will be throughout the 2023 campaign unless some of the faults in his game that led to losing multiple quarterback battles over his college career return.
Milton has the talent to be the best quarterback in the nation. He has one of the strongest arms in the nation (probably the strongest, though I can't say I've seen every quarterback on every roster throw the ball) and he has ideal size. If Milton can "put it all together", he could easily be the most exciting player in college football.
The Florida native showed vast improvements during the Vols' win against the Clemson Tigers in the Orange Bowl last season. If Milton carries those improvements into the 2023 season, it could be game-on in the SEC East division title race.
