The Tennessee Vols baseball team is having a LOT of fun right now.
Tennessee is 30-1 (11-0 in the SEC) and they've won 22 straight games.
Part of the reason the Vols are so dominant is that head coach Tony Vitello allows the team to be themselves and have some fun.
Tennessee first baseman Luc Lipcius gave us a great example of that "fun" atmosphere on Saturday night during the Vols' win over Missouri.
Lipcius scored easily from second on a single by Jared Dickey. Instead of sliding (which wasn't necessary because he was easily safe) or just trotting across home plate, Lipcius decided to get on his knees and touch home plate with his index finger (a reference to the movie The Benchwarmers).
Check it out:
You either love the Vols or you hate them. And if you hate them, it's likely because they're 30-1 and have fun like this.
After the game, Vitello was asked about Lipcius' "slide".
“I don't know what was going on there, hopefully no one sees that [as disrespectful], either," said Vitello. "If anyone knows Luc Lipcius, there was no [over] confidence or rubbing anything in, or style points, or anything you want to talk about with that."
"All it is, is a kid that looks like his number, which I'll let you guys look it up on the roster [No. 4], and yet he acts like he's six," added Vitello. "I mean, he got that bunt hit against Vanderbilt, I thought we're gonna have to pinch run for him because he wouldn't stop smiling and pumping his fist and stuff like that."
“So, you know, he's a leader in his own right. This is a kids’ game, and you're probably better off treating it like that in most cases. And he does it all the time."
Vitello is clearly comfortable letting his guys just be themselves — even if it ruffles some feathers.
