The Tennessee Vols are in a tough spot when it comes to quarterback depth right now.

Tennessee has four games remaining this season, but they only have two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

And those two scholarship quarterbacks — Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton — have battled various injuries throughout the season.

Tennessee is only two disastrous plays away from not having a scholarship quarterback on the field.

So who would the Vols turn to in that situation?

We'd most likely see redshirt freshman Gaston Moore take the field if Hooker and Milton were unavailable.

Tennessee Vols

Moore is a UCF transfer who served as Josh Heupel's scout team quarterback with the Knights in 2020.

The Hilton Head, SC native wasn't rated by 247Sports during the recruiting process, but there's a reason for that.

And it's not because he lacks talent.

According to Moore's high school coach BJ Payne, the 6-foot-2 quarterback was a "late bloomer".

“He was kind of a late bloomer as far as total development as a quarterback,” said Payne to Vols Wire earlier this year. “His senior year he blossomed. It is one of those things now, recruiting goes earlier and earlier with kids, so it is really hard to have a great senior year and get opportunities."

Moore passed for 2,016 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just four interceptions during his senior year at Hilton Head High School.

Moore has a good grasp of Heupel's offense after spending a year with the UT head coach in Orlando.

It obviously wouldn't be an ideal situation for the Vols to have to turn to a walk-on quarterback in the final month of the season. But at least they have a player in Moore with a good arm and some upside that can take the reigns of the offense in an emergency situation.
