The NFL season is in full swing, with more than a few surprises along the way. Contenders have turned into pretenders, and some new teams have risen in the rankings to become some of the most elite in the league.

There are plenty of matchups over the next few weeks featuring teams in the top 10 facing off against one another, which should drastically change the power rankings moving forward.

From Daniel Jones’ rise with the Indianapolis Colts to Drake Maye’s ascension to one of the best in the league, let’s take a look at the top 10 teams heading into Week 9. There is still plenty of time to right some of the wrongs, but here are the best teams in the league.

No. 1: Indianapolis Colts

The No. 1 spot belongs to the Colts, who have been quite the surprise in the NFL this season. They have the best record in the league, with one of the best running backs, and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Destin Adams, Indianapolis reporter for A to Z Sports, discussed the rise of the Colts.

“The Colts have the best record in the NFL at 7-1, just like we all expected before the season (sarcasm). The team’s balanced attack has led to arguably the best offense in the NFL.

“The team leads the league with 270 points scored. They’ve proven that they can adjust their game plan weekly to attack opposing defenses’ flaws and do it at a high level.

“If they can improve some obvious weaknesses on their defense ahead of the trade deadline, this team feels like a legitimate Super Bowl contender.” – Destin Adams

Next three games: @ Pittsburgh Steelers, vs. Atlanta Falcons, @ Kansas City Chiefs

No. 2: Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions continue to look like one of the NFC’s most complete teams as they enter Week 9 with a 5-2 record and the fourth-best point differential in the league at +64. Their only losses have come against strong opponents — the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs — underscoring just how competitive this team has been through the first half of the season.

Detroit’s most recent outing was a 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs broke out for 218 total yards and two touchdowns. The defense held Tampa Bay to a single touchdown and limited big plays, with the team’s reserve defensive backs stepping up to fill key roles.

It will be worth watching how general manager Brad Holmes approaches the Nov. 4 trade deadline. The Lions have been steady defensively but could look to add depth, particularly in the secondary. Even if no moves are made, Detroit is in a strong position heading into the second half of the season and remains locked in a battle with Green Bay for control of the NFC North.

Next three games: vs. Minnesota Vikings, @ Washington Commanders, @ Philadelphia Eagles

No. 3: Kansas City Chiefs

Charles Goldman, A to Z Sports Kansas City reporter, is excited about the upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Bills, as he should be. It’s one of the best rivalries in sports, and with a win, the Chiefs have a chance to bump up even higher in the standings.

“Two of the AFC’s elite quarterbacks going head-to-head in a midseason match with potential playoff implications, this isn’t just an exciting game for the Chiefs fans and Bills fans, it’s exciting for the entire NFL.

“The Chiefs are finally realizing the vision that GM Brett Veach had for the offense in 2024, with Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown, and Xavier Worthy now all in the fold at wide receiver. The team has also fixed their offensive line depth from a year ago as evidenced by Jaylon Moore’s success starting in place of rookie LT Josh Simmons.

It all has Patrick Mahomes playing at an MVP level despite having a below-average rushing attack. Steve Spagnuolo’s defense continues to lock things down on the other side of the ball, but they’ll be tested with an upcoming slate of teams featuring the league’s top 4 rushing yardage leaders.

After their 0-2 start to the season and another loss to Jacksonville that looks worse with each passing week, there’s little room for error with Kansas City moving forward.” – Charles Goldman

Next three games: @ Buffalo Bills, @ Denver Broncos, vs. Indianapolis Colts

No. 4: Philadelphia Eagles

Kelsey Kramer, A to Z Sports Philadelphia writer, broke down the rise of the Eagles after a resounding victory over the New York Giants.

“Are the Philadelphia Eagles officially back? That’s the biggest question heading into their bye week after a dominant Week 8 win over the New York Giants.

“Jalen Hurts tossed four touchdown passes, while Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby each rushed for more than 100 yards in what was easily the team’s most complete offensive showing of the season. The victory has fans wondering if we’re finally seeing flashes of the 2024 Super Bowl contender everyone expected to see at the start of the year.

“Still, what happens after the break will be telling. For now, one thing’s certain — the Eagles know how to win, even if it’s an ugly one.” – Kelsey Kramer

Next three games: @ Green Bay Packers, vs. Detroit Lions, @ Dallas Cowboys

No. 5: Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are red hot after back-to-back victories over the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. Currently, the team sits atop the AFC West after an offseason spent by coach Sean Payton expressing how this team has a Super Bowl-caliber roster.

Second-year signal-caller Bo Nix has taken the important next step in the offense, with a youth movement continuing to shine. Rookies RJ Harvey and Pat Bryant both scored touchdowns in the win against the Cowboys.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Broncos’ success has been that of the defense. Once again, Denver is looking to lead the league in sacks and is forcing pressures at an unprecedented rate with Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper coming off the edge and a stout defensive front rotation that makes life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.

There were concerns about the team starting slow on offense, and they dispelled those fears in the win over the Cowboys. If Denver can continue its momentum on offense and allow the defense to keep doing its thing, it could quickly move up the ranks even further.

Next three games: @ Houston Texans, vs. Las Vegas Raiders, vs. Kansas City Chiefs

No. 6: New England Patriots

Sophie Weller, A to Z Sports trending news writer, kept things short and sweet when talking about the rise of quarterback Drake Maye and the New England Patriots. The Patriots sit atop the AFC East after some surprising early-season performances.

“The New England Patriots have far surpassed what people thought going into the season. They are firing off on all fronts. The offense with Drake Maye, as well as the receiver performances.

“On defense, they’re coming up with major stops when it’s necessary, despite having some troubles with a fast start. Regardless of what people are saying about their easier schedule, if they play to their best ability, there aren’t many teams in the NFL that they can’t beat right now.” – Sophie Weller

Next three games: vs. Atlanta Falcons, @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers, vs. New York Jets

No. 7: Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills have a chance to bump up even higher on the list with an upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs up next. Buffalo is currently second in the AFC East, behind the New England Patriots.

After consecutive losses to the Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo bounced back in a big way against the Carolina Panthers, winning 40-9. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady said that he’s not concerned at all about the passing game, though signs point to the team trying to add a top playmaker ahead of the trade deadline.

The defense suffered a big blow with the loss of defensive tackle Ed Oliver, although they got some big pieces back after Week 6. Edge Michael Hoecht and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, along with the rise of rookie defensive tackle Deone Walker, should have the team more than ready for the challenges ahead.

On offense, while quarterback Josh Allen hasn’t been playing otherworldly like he has in previous seasons, some games just don’t require him to. In Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, Allen put on his Superman cape and led the team to victory, showing that it is still part of his game. However, perhaps the biggest MVP on the team is that of running back James Cook, who surpassed 200 yards on the ground and, by advanced metrics, is one of the very best across the entire NFL.

With a win against the Chiefs, Buffalo could bump up more than just one spot after Week 9 is said and done.

Next three games: vs. Kansas City Chiefs, @ Miami Dolphins, vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

No. 8: Green Bay Packers

Wendell Ferreira from A to Z Sports Green Bay, highlighted some of the strengths and weaknesses for the club through the first 9 weeks of the NFL season. The team is starting to come alive on offense, and adding Micah Parsons has been worth every penny.

“The Packers have been up and down in terms of performance, but just compared to high expectations after the team played great against the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders to open the regular season. But Green Bay got back to a higher level of performance against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, scoring 28 points and allowing only nine in the second half.

“The team is in the top 10 by DVOA on both offense and defense, which shows how high the ceiling is. Jordan Love has played at an MVP-caliber level, and the offense tends to be more explosive now that Christian Watson is back — Jayden Reed is expected to return soon as well.

“On defense, Micah Parsons has elevated basically everyone. In addition to Parsons’ individual production, the attention he draws has allowed Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, and Devonte Wyatt to play better as well. The big roster weakness is the lack of reliable cornerback play, although the front office is betting on the pressure upfront to mitigate those issues.” – Wendell Ferreira

Next three games: vs. Carolina Panthers, vs. Philadelphia Eagles, @ New York Giants

No. 9: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Evan Winter from A to Z Sports Tampa Bay broke down why it makes sense for the team to fall to No. 9 on the power rankings. There are plenty of things to clean up and improve on, but a stellar start to the season.

“The Bucs enter the bye week with a 6-2 record that has them on top of the NFC South. It’s a very impressive feat when considering all the injuries they’ve experienced.

“No. 9 makes sense, but the Bucs have a lot to figure out over the bye. Josh Grizzard’s offense has taken a major step back over the last two weeks, and the cause looks to be a combination of injuries plus the fact Grizz is a first-year OC. Everything on offense needs to be looked at closely over the next week.

“The defense appears to be in good shape and looked just fine without Haason Reddick, even if it was against a bad Saints offense.

“If the Bucs can get healthy and stay that way, they should be fine. But it remains to be seen if they’re among the NFC’s elite after losing to the Eagles and Lions in rather convincing fashion” – Evan Winter

Next three games: vs. New England Patriots, @ Buffalo Bills, @ Los Angeles Rams

No. 10: Los Angeles Rams

Kyle Crabbs, NFL staff writer at A to Z Sports, opened up on the Rams’ recent success and how they can continue the momentum as the season progresses.

“The Rams’ reputation lies in their offensive firepower. Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua are a prolific combination in the passing game when healthy, and the Rams appear set to welcome Nacua back to the fray this week.

“But it’s the Rams’ defense that gives this team its upside for this season. Sitting at 5-2, Los Angeles has a top-three scoring defense in points allowed and is top-eight in the NFL in both net yards per attempt and in yards per rush. Defensive coordinator Chris Shula is sure to be a hot head coaching interview request amid his unit’s play this season. Byron Young has made the leap of one of the most disruptive ends in football to pair with Jared Verse.

“They’ve now added Roger McCreary to the secondary, too. They have the coaching, the elite cornerstone players, and the right mix of youth and energy to beat anyone at any time.” – Kyle Crabbs

Next three games: vs. New Orleans Saints, @ San Francisco 49ers, vs. Seattle Seahawks
