The Kansas City Chiefs are one step closer to controlling their own destiny, as they say.
The Chiefs were supposed to be in a re-tooling year, as they lost their superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Instead, they are now 13-3 with a win over the Denver Broncos, and are one win and one Buffalo Bills loss away from hosting their fifth-straight AFC Championship game, if they were to make it that far.
At 13-3, the Bills have the same record, but currently hold the tie-breaker, which means the Bills are the number one seed in the AFC as we speak. If they lose to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football in Week 17, and the Chiefs win out, the Chiefs will then have possession of the number one seed and have a first-round bye week.
A first-round bye week means more rest.
It's safe to say we will all be watching Monday Night Football and may be the only time we will ever actively root for the Bengals to win. Fans and media won't be the only ones watching though. I think the Chiefs will be tuned in as well.
"Oh yeah, we will watch it," head coach Andy Reid said after the win over the Broncos. "Yeah, we will see how it goes."
Reid is one of us on Monday, it seems.
That game will be good, even if there weren't playoff implications for the Chiefs. Of course, the Chiefs still have a chance to get that first round bye if the Bills were to lose in Week 18 as well, but we all know the Bengals are more of a threat than the Patriots are.
