Patriots’ Super Bowl champ pays his respect to Bills mafia to close out Highmark Stadium in the perfect way
An incredibly classy move by a former division rival.
The Buffalo Bills closed out what appears to be the final chapter in Highmark Stadium with a dominant win over the New York Jets in Week 18. It wasn’t particularly close from the opening drive, with quarterback Mitch Trubisky finding tight end Dawson Knox for a wide-open touchdown, which was indicative of how the day was going to go for Buffalo.
Bills Mafia got to party all night, saying their final farewells to the beloved and decorated venue. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place when the closing moments took place, and a special video played for the fans in attendance. A bonus was that they threw “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls on the screen, which makes watching anything impossible without welling up.
New England Patriots legend shows love to Bills Mafia
Former New England Patriots Super Bowl Champ and current broadcaster for CBS Sports, Jason McCourty, paid his respects to the fan base and the city, despite playing for the division rivals for much of his career.
“What a scene in Buffalo,” McCourty wrote. “No one left their seats when the game was over. Highlights played on the Jumbotron and fans sat in appreciation! Honored to have been a part of the broadcast closing out the home stadium since 1973!”
A fitting farewell to Highmark Stadium
While the game may not have been exciting, a few key players on the team got to say goodbye in a big way. Quarterback Josh Allen took a ceremonious snap to keep his record starting streak alive, and running back James Cook got a few touches to widen the gap on the NFL’s rushing title. What’s more, Knox himself earned a massive payday with the touchdown in the first half; it was a big celebration.
With the scoreboard showing some historic moments, players like cornerback Tre’Davious White took in the emotional moment, feeling the full impact of what it all means. There have been many legendary players who have walked through those tunnels, thrown on the jersey, and had some big moments in that stadium, and it’s not lost on the players how impactful the moment truly was.
As the lights dimmed and the echoes of “Iris” faded into the cold Buffalo night, Highmark Stadium took its final bow the only way it knew how, surrounded by gratitude, emotion, and the Bills Mafia’s unwavering love. The building may be closing its doors, but the memories forged inside will live forever.
