The Chicago Bears now have an official date for when the Ben Johnson Era will begin, at least on the field.
Offseason programs will be starting for teams with new coaches, such as the Bears, next week and the NFL has also announced the rest of the key offseason dates for all 32 teams in the league.
For the on-field work, all teams will first open the offseason program with two weeks of meetings and conditioning work before getting on the field. That's great for a team like the Bears looking to first build a new culture with their new head coach.
“Listen, it’s a different regime. What happened last year was last year. We’re moving on,” Johnson said Tuesday at the annual league meeting. “We’re moving past that.”
As for what the message will be to the returning players coming back to the facilities next week, Johnson is still ironing out that part of it.
“I haven’t totally formulated what that presentation is going to look like quite yet,” he added. “I tend to like to procrastinate just a little bit. That’s where the best work tends to come out. So I’ll figure that out over the weekend.”
Regardless, it's an exciting time for the Bears. Next week will be Johnson's first real opportunity to address the full roster of players and the same goes for the rest of the new coaching staff coming into the building.
The biggest connection for Johnson to start building on a day-to-day basis is going to be with quarterback Caleb Williams going into his second season leading the offense.
"We've got to get on the same page because it'll be a little bit different for him than what he experienced last year, and if we can mesh together and start speaking the same language, that's when things will really start to take off," Johnson explained.
The start of the offseason program will only be the beginning of a long process ahead for this team moving toward the 2025. Here's what the rest of the summer schedule will look like for the Bears:
