Best of the rest: Top free agents still available for the Bears at remaining positions of need after the first wave of free agency
The Chicago Bears still have some space to make a few more signings on the open market.
The Chicago Bears made a few splashes on the first unofficial day of free agency agreeing to deals with three outside additions in DT Neville Gallimore, S Coby Bryant, and LB Devin Bush along with a handful of re-signings.
After the dust settled on the first day of the legal tampering period, there’s still plenty of quality free agents still out there and multiple that can fill remaining needs for the Bears. It’s worth noting that the Bears structured low Year 1 cap hits with the three new signings, but the team still doesn’t have much remaining space to work with, barring any restructures.
Here’s which positions of need still remain and which players could be of interest for Chicago.
Analyzing remaining targets and team needs for the Bears after the first day of free agency
Defensive End
- Trey Hendrickson
- Cameron Jordan
- Bradley Chubb
- Logan Hall
Chicago prioritized adding a interior defensive lineman over an edge so far, with a strong crop of edge rushers set to enter the draft. That doesn’t mean the Bears won’t still look to sign another free agent. Trey Hendrickson is still out there, although he’ll be very expensive. Cameron Jordan and Bradley Chubb are cheaper veterans that could be ideal scheme fits but still will be too much for the space Chicago currently has. And then you have Logan Hall, one of the players I predicted the Bears will sign at a low price but has nice upside and versatility. At this point, I’d be shocked if Chicago lands an edge rusher, but we can’t completely rule it out. This just seems more like an early draft priority.
Safety
- Kevin Byard III
- Jaquan Brisker
- Kyle Dugger
- Jaylinn Hawkins
- C.J. Gardner-Johnson
The Bears locked in a new hybrid safety in Bryant and now need to continue filling out the rest of the room. It’s unlikely the Bears spent big money on two safeties, which would rule out the top three options above, unless Kevin Byard can drop his price and the Bears make some adjustments to fit him in. Re-signing C.J. Gardner-Johnson is a legit option I’d consider along with re-signing Elijah Hicks for cheap. This is another position worth monitoring early in the draft.
Outside Cornerback
- Riq Woolen
- Marshon Lattimore
- Trevon Diggs
This is not the most inspiring group whatsoever and each of these three players would bring their own share of red flags to the table. Yet, all three are players I’ve considered the Bears adding over the last year since the new staff took over. Brad Biggs noted Monday morning that the outside cornerback spot would be something to watch and big money went flying for players like Alontae Taylor, Cor’Dale Flott, and Jamel Dean. If this is the best leftovers, the Bears should just draft a CB.
Wide Reciever
- Hollywood Brown
- Greg Dortch
- Kalif Raymond
What the Bears are looking for at the WR position is some speed out of the slot with Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze on the outside. These are the best available options. Hollywood Brown was a guy I wanted last offseason and Greg Dortch has always been a favorite of mine watching from afar. Kalif Raymond has experience working with Ben Johnson and offers return value as well.
Verdict
Don’t get your hopes up that the Bears make another big outside signing, barring any restructures that can free up enough space. Chicago will likely make a few more small re-signings and get geared up for the draft where defense will be a priority (DE, S, CB).
