The Chicago Bears have made an expected deal on the day of the NFL Trade Deadline by moving on from former starting running back Khalil Herbert.

According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, the Bears are trading the 26-year-old back to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2025 7th-round selection.

"Juice" lands with a new team that will give him a fresh start to his career going into the second-half of his contract year.

Cincinnati quickly became one of the top teams in the sweepstakes to land Herbert after the team announced that running back Zack Moss would be out indefinitely with a neck injury. Yesterday I wrote about the potential move, and today it's official.

Herbert now joins the Bengals backfield that was dominated by Chase Brown in the team's Week 9 win. Brown set career highs in carries and rushing yards and was the only running back on the team to record a touch in the entire game.

With the win, the Bengals are very much still alive in the playoff hunt and now add a fresh and explosive back into their offense to help make a second-half playoff push.

Herbert was phased out of the Bears' offense after the team signed D'Andre Swift to be the starter during the offseason and drafted Roschon Johnson last year in the fourth-round. The team also activated Travis Homer from the injured reserve on October 26th.

Herbert was held out of the last two games as a healthy scratch for the Bears, which was writing on the wall that a move was going to be made prior to this afternoon's deadline at 4:00 pm.

In 2023, Herbert was expected to be the Bears' featured back on offense and posted career-highs in touches (152) despite missing five games during the season. In his career, Herbert has averaged 4.8 yards per carry, a number that really shows off his burst and explosiveness by itself.

Now that he's with a new team, Herbert can have the chance to bet on himself and try to cash in on a new contract this offseason. He's currently in the final year of his rookie contract and the Bears were smart to get something in return as opposed to letting him walk as a free agent at the end of the season.
