There was an funny turn of events that happened over the last calendar year between the Chicago Bears and the Buffalo Bills involving the 109th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Bears general manager Ryan Poles and Bills general manager Brandon Beane have now swapped that one selection THREE separate times going back to the 2024 NFL Draft and I wanted to fully flesh out how everything ended up working out.
And it all starts back in 2024.
Prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bears finally landed a player they always had their eyes on in Bills offensive lineman Ryan Bates, sending their fifth-round pick (No. 144) in the 2024 NFL Draft.
A few weeks later, the Bears held just four selections in the 2024 NFL Draft and used those selections to draft Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, Kiran Amegadjie, and Tory Taylor. By the fourth-round, the Bears completed their initial draft class.
But, the Bears weren't fully content with the haul and had their eyes on bringing in another player in the class. So, the Bears traded back into the 2024 draft sending their fourth-round pick (No. 109) to the Bills to get their fifth-rounder (No. 144) back.
The Bears then used that selection to draft Kansas defensive end Austin Booker, who went on to play all 17 games as a rookie. The craziest part is that Poles attempted to first use the future fourth (No. 109) to move up and secure Odunze with the Falcons.
Pick 109 Madness Continues
Flashforward to Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft and the wildness involving the Bears, Bills and pick No. 109 continues.
On Friday, the Bears traded down from the 41st overall pick sending picks 41, 72, and 240 to Buffalo for picks 56, 62, and you guessed it, pick No. 109.
To kick off Day 3 on Saturday, the Bears AGAIN traded back with the Bills sending the lucky No. 109 back to Buffalo in exchange for picks 132 and 169 in 2025.
Full Outcome Of The Trades
Bears Received:
OL Ryan Bates
DE Austin Booker (144th pick in 2024)
OT Ozzy Trapilo (56th pick in 2025)
DT Shemar Turner (62nd pick in 2025)
LB Ruben Hyppolite II (132nd pick in 2025)
CB Zah Frazier (169th pick in 2025)
Bills Received:
DT T.J. Sanders (41st pick in 2025)
DE Landon Jackson (72nd pick in 2025)
DT Deone Walker (109th pick in 2025)
WR Kaden Prather (240th pick in 2025)
Overall, this kind of worked out for both sides. Obviously, the Bears came out of these deals with more swings on players but the Bills felt strong about the guys they moved up for. We'll see how this unique situation plays out in years to come.
