Anytime the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos play each other, there are two things you are guaranteed to see. First, you are going to see a battle, and some tough players making hard hits against a team they hate. Secondly, you are always going to see the Chiefs win. At least that last one is what the last 15 have been.
These last two against the Broncos have been no different. Denver is bad, but for some odd reason, Kansas City loves playing to their opponents, as they have done twice now against the Broncos this season.
This offense hasn't been the same the last few weeks, and the defense has stepped up a bit, but still has some boneheaded play every now and then. Both of those explain why Week 14 and Week 17 were such close games.
They won in Week 17, of course, but it wasn't easy. Kansas City had to dig deep and find the will to win.
“Just grit, toughness, a complete team effort," defensive end Frank Clark said. "(We) struggled a bit in the first half but you know, (we) obviously finished the game on a strong note so (we) got the job done as a team.”
The Chiefs have now won 15 straight against the Broncos, which feels like it has been an eternity since the last Denver win over Kansas City. This year, the Broncos have had everything possible go wrong.
They got the quarterback they have always wanted and paired him with a young, offensive-minded, first-time head coach. Neither of those pan out and the team just gets obliterated with injuries.
But, their defense is really, really good, as we have seen twice now. They make it hard on the Chiefs' offense, forcing them to do things they don't necessarily want to.
“Offensively (and) defensively. (They were) driving down the field, they got a few runs up the middle," Clark continued. "The goal is to stop a few of the big plays (and) he had a little bit of momentum carrying over from his previous games going into that first half. But (we) did a better job in the second half (and) got some turnovers, (better) execution (and) less mistakes as a whole and that got the job done for us.”
The offense for the Broncos, well, they have been terrible this season. they have been the worst in the league statistically, besides when they are playing the Chiefs. They run the ball a lot, which forced the Chiefs to get gritty and be tough, as Clark said.
These two teams are done playing each other for the year, and I'm sure both are happy in that sense, but that doesn't mean the battles won't continue next season. When they do meet the two times they are scheduled to, the Chiefs will likely be doing exactly what Clark said, again.
